Mumbai Lens: Framed at the Pavement Art Gallery

Whenever I am in the Kala Ghoda area of South Mumbai, I always make it a point to visit the Pavement Art Gallery, also known as the Art Plaza. Located outside the Jehangir Art Gallery, this Pavement Art Gallery offers exhibition space for artists to display and sell their works. Not all the stuff is good, but there is always something for everyone. Over the years, I have picked up pen and ink drawings of birds, charcoal sketches of Mumbai’s iconic buildings, as well as some miniature landscape watercolours from here.

So here I was at the Pavement Art Gallery on a January afternoon. It was a pleasant weather day, with a cool breeze blowing. As I was browsing at the paintings, I saw a couple doing the same.

Checking out the art on display at the Pavement Art Gallery

They stopped by each painting and discussed its merits and demerits at length earnestly. There were about 50 odd paintings and they had every intention of looking and commenting upon every painting. I couldn’t help photographing them, though I did so guiltily, after which I left.

I wonder though, if they did buy any painting.

Mumbai Lens is a photographic series which, as the name suggests, is Mumbai-centric and is an attempt to capture the various moods of the city through my camera lens. You can read more posts from this series here.

  1. This pavement exhibition thing seems really cool… I haven’t seen one in Delhi.
Oh some people are gifted commentators… in fact I pride myself in being one too though I try to restrain the commentary to subjects I have some expertise in. 😛

    1. Isn’t there something like this in Dilli Haat? I remember seeing something like this years ago there. But, yes, the Pavement Art Gallery is art at it affordable best. 😀

  2. Since I am into art, I always stop by the Jehangir Art Gallery and see whats happening in the Art District. I was in Bombay yesterday and for the first time couldn’t find the time to see what was happening there. The Kala Ghoda is a super place to be…but then, so is Bombay!

  3. Many art students actually walk through the pavement gallery to discuss techniques… i used to attend french classes nearby and used to regularly walk past… i simply love that area. and once i spoke to a group of students who were discussing the paintings… they told me that they regularly exhibited their own work, and also came to see what others had done…

  4. There is something magical about the area. Some people find it quite pretentious and arty-farty, but I just get an adrenalin rush whenever I come here. It is always a mood lifter and a stress buster.
