Do you ever have a song, an idea, a storyline, or an image stuck in your head? And it just refuses to go away? For some time at least? I have this with music—it could be a song, an instrumental piece, a jingle, etc. This becomes my “now’”song, and the “nowness” (pardon my English here) could be for any length of time.
Yesterday was a rare day at home. I actually got control of the TV remote, and so after the first few minutes of savouring the power of having the TV remote in my hand, I got down to what one does best with it — surf channels. One of the channels I halted at was a music channel which had a programme on songs beginning with the word “Zindagi”. The half hour programme saw some of the more popular and well known “Zindagi” songs getting discussed and screened.
As I watched the “Zindagi” songs play across the screen, a long-forgotten “Zindagi” number stirred in the depths of my memories and slowly uncoiled itself and before long I had muted the TV volume and was singing Zindagi mere ghar aana, from the 1979 film Dooriyan.
I first heard this song, which is sung by Bhupendra Singh and Anuradha Paudwal, on Binaca Geetmala around the time it was released. I had loved this song even then and would often be found humming or singing along when the song was aired. Soon other songs displaced it and this song got relegated to the deep, vast recesses of my memory. Only to have it resurrected with the programme on “Zindagi” songs. I find that I still like the lilting tune, and today I can even appreciate the simple, romantic lyrics.

How beautiful!! I wish I could connect to music like that, Sudha…the only one that I remember and I remember so often is “Zindagi ka safar, Hai ye kaisa safar Koi samjha nahi,koi jana nahin.” Bah–I guess that is so me to remember this song…

Ah… Bhavana. Music is an emotion and connection to music is therefore, an emotional one. Each one of us connects to music in different ways. And I connect to “Zindagi ka safar, hai ye kaisa safar…” at my introspective best. You see, I have a “now” song for evey mood and every emotion. 😀

Bhupinder- one of the most underrated singers of our time. It was unfortunate that he came into his own in the dying stages of an era when playback singing was an ego-free collaborative effort by the composer, lyricist , singer and the director.

Bhupinder’s songs are for the gentle listener, much like Ruskin Bond’s stories that are meant for the gentle reader. And even at the peak of his popularity, I do not think that Bhupinder had the numbers that, say, his contemporaries had. But I’m glad that there are still some people who enjoy his music today.

“Zindagi! Kaisi hai paheli haye” is the one that crossed my mind, instantly. On a happier note is “Hai Zindagi, gale laga le”.

My now song is ‘Apne pyar ke sapne sach huye’ from Barsat ki ek raat. I heard it after a long gap and just loved it 🙂

The zindagi song that has stuck on for long is Zindagi ke safar me guzar jaate hain jo makaam, woh phir nahi aate…I dont know who is there in the song, but lyrics are remembered, during happy times!

Not really a “zindagi” song per se, I have always loved “Secret Smile” by Semisonic which is alternates as a pretty cool love song. As for a “Zindagi” song I think nothing works better than “I’ll Be there for you” by the Rembrandts.

I have a playlist of Zindagi songs and most of the songs mentioned here are in that list. 🙂 I’ll mention one song which hasn’t made it here. “Katra katra milti hai, katra katra jeene do. Zindagi hai” sung by Asha Bhosale.
