My “now” song: Kuchh toh log kahenge

Do you ever have a song, an idea, a storyline, or an image stuck in your head? And it just refuses to go away? For some time at least? I have this with music — it could be a song, an instrumental piece, a jingle, etc. This becomes my “now’” song, and the “nowness”  (pardon my English here) could be for any length of time.

Last week, I received a call from an old friend. She was quite upset with a common acquaintance of ours for having made some disparaging comments about her on a social media platform. I had seen those comments and also the insecurity that had brought forth such petty comments.

I mentioned as much to my friend and told her to just ignore the comments. She said that she was trying to, but was finding it difficult as she was worried about what others who had read those comments would think. Her exact words were in Hindi: “Log kya kahenge?”

And my reply to her was this song:

“Kuchh toh log kahenge, logon ka kaam hai kahna
chhodo bekar ki baaton mein, Kahin beet na jaaye raine…”

I haven’t stopped singing this song since then. Not surprisingly, this beautiful song from the film Amar Prem, sung by Kishore Kumar to music composed by R.D. Burman with lyrics by Anand Bakshi has become my “now” song. I find this song very self-affirmative, especially in a world that is so impatient and with people who are so quick to jump to conclusions and judge you.

My friend has put the incident behind her and is feeling better, much better. To be honest, I’m feeling better too. I didn’t know I needed this song as well. 🙂

PS: What is your current “now” song?

  1. I agree. Sometimes the song does not want to leave your mind. These songs are like good brain parasites, the one you are happy to host. The Eagles’, “Peaceful Easy Feeling” is buzzing over my head since forever.

    1. Gita, I can’t tell you how much I laughed over your comment. It struck a chord as I have people on my TL who are obsessed with likes, or rather the number of likes. It’s sad, pathetic and scary at the same time.

  2. It’s funny you write this. Way back when I was a teen and agonizing over making adjustments to a new school and dealing with the whispering and giggling behind my back, the pointing fingers, my dad (to whom I habitually complained) sang this song to me! It’s been my mantra ever since for dealing with a world when it shows its unkind side! Thanks for writing this.

    1. Ah ! New schools and the changes it brings. I know what you mean, as I’ve studied in 8 schools over 12 years. Music didn’t help me, burying my nose in a book helped. Music is for the adult me 🙂

  3. I agree because the song has a charm that refuses to vacate spaces. I just got back on to the social media wheel after a week-long break. My now song is “Kasto Mazza” from Pradeep Sarkar’s “Parineeta” sung by Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal.

    1. I love all songs from Parineeta, especially “Soona, soona mann ka aangan”. That is the nest composition in that film.

And how was the break from social media? Did you get withdrawal symptoms? Managed fine? Glad to be back? Do tell

  4. My one dissenting voice in a crowd of those who love this song! The lyrics are great, but when one keeps listening to it day after day, the song comes out of your ears and nose, for good measure 😀 I used to listen to it as a teen and then got so bored with it that even today it is not a favourite 😦

    1. To each her own, Alarmelvalli. 🙂 And thank you for the dissenting voice. How else to have a discussion? 😉

I too get tired of certain songs, but this one… Never. It is after all one of my “now” songs !

  5. I can completely relate to the feeling, Sudha. Like you said, we sometimes need one. Something to obsess over, tune to seamlessly. My ‘Now’ song would be Yaaram from Ek Thi Daayan. The words are beautiful, almost surreal yet so simple. It never fails to soothe my nerves.

    1. I just listened to Yaaram, Deboshree. Thanks for introducing me to that song. It is a long way from becoming my “now” song, but is indeed very soothing as you say. 🙂

    1. It’s rare to find such meaningful lyrics today. The seventies was really a golden period for Hindi films, where music and lyrics had a perfect match. 🙂

  6. I was just thinking about this song and was reading the lyrics online and a few lines which always catch my attention are –
“tu kaun hai tera naam hai kya,
    sita bhi yahaan badnaam hui”
    and of course,
    “kuch toh log kahenge,
    logon ka kaam hai kehna”

My ‘now’ song would be Lagan Laagi Re from the film Trishna composed by Amit Trivedi.

    1. “Lagan kagi re” has such a catchy tune that the lyrics don’t register at first and then of course the lyrics slowly take over the listening experience.
Thank you so much for visiting my blog and sharing your “now” song. 🙂
