Travel Shot: Laugh and the world laughs with you

May 20, 2009. Oxford Street London.

It is the opening day of special sales at the Marks and Spencer store on the occasion of their 125th Anniversary and there’s a long line of people waiting for the store to open. As opening time nears, the crowd swells and so does the restlessness. That’s when a group of entertainers come out to interact with the crowd keep them occupied till its time for the store doors to open.

One of the entertainers is a magician who moves down the line chatting a bit to each person and sharing a magic trick or two. It’s a smooth, practiced routine and quite predictable, not to mention boring. And then something happens…

One of the people waiting in the line says something and the magician bursts out laughing and continues laughing.

laugh and the world laughs with you, london, M&SThe magician’s laughter is so clear and sincere and infectious that slowly, very slowly, the people around join him in laughing and soon all of us are laughing. It is a special moment of laughing together, and yet quite inexplicable for most of us don’t know why we are laughing (I’m quite far back in the line and don’t know what caused the magician to burst out laughing). And yet, it felt so right to laugh.

laugh and the world laughs with youA short while ago, while searching my digital photo library for a suitable photograph for a New Year’s post, I came across this one. Even after so many years, when I saw this photo, I started laughing prompting my mother to ask me why. When I showed her this photo she too couldn’t help smiling and then joining me in laughing.

Happy New Year, dear friend. Here’s wishing you a year full of good health, good times, happiness, contentment, and laughter. Yes, laughter. For if you laugh, the world laughs with you. 😀

  1. This is uncanny! I just pulled out and re-published an old post from the first year of my blogging, which is about smiling and making others smile. In fact, I was going to quote your title too but didn’t in the end 🙂 There are some things which are contagious and one of them is laughter. A smile might not elicit another in response, but laughter invites laughter unless of course it is directed at you!! Wish you a very happy new year too, Sudha!

    1. Happy New Year, Zephyr.

A sincere smile and genuine laughter is really the best medicine (however cliched that may sound). In these cynical, competitive and insecure times, this is just what we need. 😀

  2. There is no better medicine than laughter. Laughter is also infectious; so, its a wonder why people are developing immunity to it. There couldn’t have been a better way to start 2015 than this photo. So, to you, and your followers, may 2015 be filled with laughter

  3. Hey Sudha, wish you a very happy and laughter filled new year. And of course many such wonderful posts on travel and thatandthis. Have you got this NSK song in your collection? Maybe you’d like to start this year with this one. It makes you laugh uncontrollably when you listen to it and that is not even watching the video, just listening 😀 Note how the sulking Rajam begins laughing even as he starts the song. 1. Happy New Year to you too, Alarmelvalli.

Thank you so much for sharing this song. I watched the video in my office and my colleagues, who don’t understand Tamil, also did. And we all laughed together. It was so contagious 😀
