My “now” song: Like a Winter’s Dream

Do you ever have a song, an idea, a story line, or an image stuck in your head? And it just refuses to go away? For some time at least? I have this with music — it could be a song, an instrumental piece, a jingle, a background score, etc. That particular piece of music becomes my “now’” song, and the “nowness”  (pardon my English here) could remain with me for any length of time.

My current favorite piece of music — “Like a Winter’s Dream” sung by Kwak Jin Won — is quite different from what I usually listen to. It’s in Korean (a language I don’t know), and sung by a singer I had never heard of before. But that didn’t stop me from falling in love with the music for the emotions it evokes is something I can understand and identify with. Do listen to the song and the English translation of the beautiful lyrics before you proceed to read the rest of the post.

It must have been in December 2019 when I discovered the world of K-Dramas or Korean Television Dramas.  The funny English subtitles didn’t deter me from watching them soon I was hooked. On February 24, 2020, a new K-Drama titled When the Weather is Fine (or I’ll Come to You When the Weather is Fine) premiered. I was quite excited to watch this particular K-drama as the preview revealed that the male lead was a bookseller and a female lead a cello player. Books and music in one K-Drama? I was totally in.

All thoughts of the bookshop, the bookseller and the cello player vanished with the opening frame of When the Weather is Fine and the guitar music that came on with the opening credits. I was entranced and when “Like a Winter’s Dream” was played I was in love with the cinematography (that needs a separate post altogether), the plot, the actors, but most of all the music. I was soon listening to this track multiple times during the day and before I knew it, this had become my “now” song.

It has been more than 2 months since I first heard this song, and I listen to it at least twice everyday — as soon as I wake up in the morning and before I go to bed. I also listen to it on a loop on the days I am unable to sleep or suddenly wake up in the middle of the night. The music is mellow, warm and cozy, like a comforting hug, and it never fails to calm me when I’m feeling a touch melancholic or anxious.

Such is the power of music for me. Such is the power of “Like a Winter’s Dream”, which will remain a very special piece of music for ever.

Dear friend, does music comfort you? Do you turn to music in difficult times? If yes, do share what you listen to. 🙂
